  • NAB. Dry spell tips. 08/10/2018  3:19pm

So.. I haven't booked in awhile, and I occasionally get a lil sad/disheartened. Normally I'd go to my friends.. but they've never experienced this and for some reason we can't relate to each other on the topic (which is a whole other issue). So.. does anyone have any resources or things they like to do/read/etc when they need a bit of comfort/motivation?

I find taking a class or seeing a show ups my motivation to keep working, even during dry spells. I’ll sometimes distract myself by working on new material, as well, whether it be a song, monologue, writing etc. Or learning a new skill during the time you’d normally be in rehearsals...for example, I recently became CPR certified and am studying to teach fitness classes....

Also- if you can get out of town, even for a day trip somewhere like the beach, or Hudson valley or someplace where you can relax for a bit- find that helpful as well....

One Less Bitter Actor by Markus Flanagan. I've read it at least three times and it always pulls me out of a dark "I'll never work again" tunnel. Don't let the title deter you, it's a great read. Some of it pertains to LA, but the overall mindset is excellent.

I’ve always enjoyed The Artist’s Way. Like with any self help type of thing, take what you like, leave what you don’t. Maybe it’s partly that I first read/did it at a time when I really needed it, but I think it’s helpful because there are actual tasks and actions to take rather than just reading a lot of nice things etc.

Collaborate with someone on something creative -- anything! Having someone else to bounce ideas off of will get the ball rolling and elevate your own thoughts. Be it a cabaret, or a youtube video, or a podcast or writing a play... not only might you generate some work for yourself while you're waiting for that next gig, but it'll take your mind off only being creative in those 2 minutes in the room. And it will remind you that you are an artist! We all go through dry spells, you're not alone. Keep putting one foot in front of the other. Best of luck to you.
