• Not to take away from this greatness, especially given what they say in this about why they're doing it this way, and it's brilliant, but why is Sarah still listed as "Caucasian"? Go whole hog for goodness' sake.

    Showbizdreamer 02/14/2018  12:39pm

I’m guessing because Sarah is the “outsider” of the show?

    ‡‡‡ 02/14/2018  1:33pm

Fine, wonderful, and why not? Should work brilliantly. Especially when everyone goes to Havana. But why 'Latinx'? The word 'Latin' itself has no gender, so why clutter it up with a PC 'x' when writing in English?

    Ron Gielgud 02/14/2018  1:42pm

I mean...I guess that's great? It doesn't add much to the story or take anything away. Just seems like a gimmick. Why not cast an all diverse Guys & Dolls? Why must everything be "all black" etc? That'd be more progressive and inclusive.

And are we now gonna have people fighting about "passing" as Latin, etc.

    Aktin 02/14/2018  1:57pm

People. Chill out. You don’t have to audition if you don’t want to.
People have been doing Guys and Dolls traditionally for 50 some years. It think it’s time for a new take on the show.

Don’t you worry. White people still have 85% of All roles.

    Mimimarquez 02/14/2018  2:00pm

@Ron Gielgud, the x is a text-based way of rejecting the a/o gender binary, to promote inclusivity of guys, gals and non-binary pals.

I don't know how to pronounce it though, was just talking about that with a colleague the other day, so if anyone has the 411 on whether it is Latinx like minx or Latinx like eenz, that would be fabulously helpful!

    iKruse 02/14/2018  4:13pm

    Is pronounced “Latin-Ex” latinx.

    Gagainsider 02/14/2018  4:21pm

So simply leaving off the 'x' is just not done, even though the word 'Latin' remains unchanged so would serve for any permutation? Why?

    Ron Gielgud 02/14/2018  5:02pm

As a Latin person, that X is just stupid. Y'all don't say Latino or Latina anyway...so Latin suits everyone just fine. LatinX feels trendy, and pretentious and definitely not created or used by anyone who is actually Latin/Hispanic. But hey, that's just me..... Also, the fact that the breakdown indicates people actually have to speak Spanish might weed out the candidates who think they..you know..want to do that whole passing thing... (I hate the term, considering it's shorthand for "they all look vaguely brownish and the same")

You don’t get to say how a group of people wants to be called.
Not surprised, audition update is full of selfish, unhappy unemployed actors.

Latinx is a gender neutral term often used in lieu of Latino or Latina (referencing Latin American cultural or racial identity). The -x replaces the standard o/a ending in Spanish and Portuguese forming nouns of the masculine and feminine genders, respectively.

    Mimimarquez 02/14/2018  7:17pm

So sorry, muchachx. I'm just an irretrieveably non-PC old (technically) white guy. I hope you get cast as Sarah. Or Miss Adelaide.

    Ron Gielgud 02/14/2018  9:07pm

a white guy thats non-pc...ooo...color me shocked...

    2460noyoudidnt 02/15/2018  12:34am

    ^ Color you bigoted.

    Ron Gielgud 02/15/2018  1:18am

Christ, why the vitriol? Isn't empathy for other people crucial in our work as actors? You asked a question and received an intelligent answer in return. If you disagree with the logic, fine, but it has no bearing on your life. No one argues with you over what pronouns to refer to you with.
