  • That "Actor" Look 06/13/2018  11:08am

Which jury of elders decided that all washed-up MFA leading men have to wear the same stupid outfit everywhere they go? The distressed cap, the soft t-shirt or baseball jersey, the same boring jeans leading down to the same ugly shoes.

For a profession that prides itself on individualism, you guys are sure doing everything in your power to all look the same. I suppose every industry has their fashion signifiers, i.e. finance with patagonia vests, digital media with gingham, law firms with painfully sharp blue suits. The acting world just uses the carefully planned casual "I'm ready for rehearsal lolz" look as dog whistle to other actors: I know how to dress, therefore I must be good actor.

I can't say the same for the ladies. I'd say that most girls bring a level of personal style to their day-to-day wardrobe that is lacking for the opposite sex - gay and straight.

Having said that, there is no excuse for wearing character heels/flats and a gemstone dress. Get out of your bubble. Dress like a normal person, not some DC policy wonk.

    You’re mad.

    thelordvarysofacting 06/13/2018  11:34am

Idk who you’re working with but almost all of my friends in MT dress very well.

    Icanseeyou 06/13/2018  12:39pm

I think I'm going to adopt this "look" just to irritate you further.

    Ehhowareya 06/13/2018  2:47pm

Everyone is just doing their best. We really don’t need to nitpick each other like this, we’re hard enough on ourselves. For the record, I do not wear the aforementioned uniform, but that’s bc I only attended undergrad. :p

    FasterThanSound 06/13/2018  3:15pm

Ummmm have you ever worn a soft t-shirt or Jersey? They’re really comfortable.

    itsalmostseven 06/13/2018  3:31pm

What I can’t stand is all the straight guys who wear the most basic and unflattering underwear ever. First, boxers should have stayed in the last millennium! Second... you’re surrounded by gay men who have superior taste... if you’re uncomfortable to ask for advice on what to wear, at least take note in the dressing room! Hanes and Fruit of the Loom should stay FAR AWAY from your underwear drawer. Start with a color or two from American Eagle and move from there. Even H&M works! Figure it out, fellas!

    Kinda True

    KellivonKellis 06/13/2018  6:03pm

Wow. This is what you're taking the time to discuss?

I personally think whatever you wear...is what you wear. It's ridiculous to me that people have "audition uniforms"...so if you're advocating for the button down/dark jeans/brown wingtips/swoopy haircut for guys...you can keep that.

Why is this even something you're concerned with?

    AFTC 06/13/2018  6:09pm

From now on, if I don't book, I'm going to blame it on wearing the wrong underwear.

Mr. Noodles, you are insane. The fact you are advocating for underwear from American Eagle and H&M only proves that you have zero fashion sense -- and what little illusion you possess is misguided, tacky, and ugly. AE makes some of the worst clothes on the planet. H&M sucks elephant nutz. I'd accept Uniqlo, or maybe Zara, but that's all still corporate big box crap, no different from the everyman-quality FOtL or Hanes you are disparaging. God forbid actors wear time-tested, affordable underwear they can pick up at Nordstrom Rack.

How are you examining all of this underwear anyway? Do you give dudes wedgies when they exit the room? Do you peep underneath the bathroom stalls?

I don't care either way, it's a healthy curiosity. I'm more upset that you think AE makes good clothes.

    Bad Brands:

    H&M
    American Eagle
    Hollister
    Abercrombie
    Tommy Hilfiger

Oh wow... I’m not expecting overnight miracles from our straight brothers. Just an improvement in the right direction. We DO have to share dressing rooms with them... and bff with their girlfriends. And believe me... I’ve heard enough of my hags bitch about their boyfriend’s choice of underwear... not to mention the frequency they choose to wash them. But that’s an entirely different topic!

    Mr. Noodles 06/13/2018  9:01pm

I just have to say... I've been auditioning on-and-off for about a decade and don't recall EVER seeing this "look"...

    bwaylvsong 06/13/2018  9:03pm

@Mr Noodles and Versatilityand everyone else struggling from this awful condition.

No no no no no honey you’re better then this!
Teach those boys the gods that are Andrew Christian, 2(x)ist, Armani, and even freakin Calvin Kline. Something that you can actually breath in. Like Kristin Cheniweth said, sing from your hoo hoo, but you can’t do that when your hoo hoo is strangled.
all a guy in American eagle says to me is that it’s gonna be a messy time.

What are they possibly teaching in these expensive MFA schools if they can’t even teach that your status as a man roots from what you got underneath.

Repent you lost hillbilly’s. come with me and see the light.

If you have a college degree you should not be wearing American Eagle. Ever.

    Smactor 06/14/2018  1:30am

    TLDR

    Who cares?
