• Surflight Theatre Summer 2018 Open Call 03/18/2018  10:34am

The listing says the monitor is calling the list at 9 a.m. Does that mean they're gonna take an unofficial and make the official based on that? Just wondering if anyone knows!

What will happen is at the call time they will read the unofficial list and you must be present. When your name is called you will go to the table and select a time. They usually do 15 people every 30 minutes. After each group they will ask some people to come back to dance.

    Keeter5 03/18/2018  12:13pm

FYI looking for girls over 5’7”

    Suiteofjacks 03/18/2018  4:20pm

Am I correct that they only cast for the entire season, not show by show?

    Maarabeth 03/18/2018  4:37pm

    Yes

    Damn Yankee 03/18/2018  6:12pm

    Do they house

    TenorTwink218 03/18/2018  8:39pm

They said all roles available though...

    Ladynapsalot 03/18/2018  9:45pm

Where does it say only girls 5'7?

    AwkieAussie 03/18/2018  9:52pm

@keeter is the dance at the end of each 30 minute group, or at the end of the day?

    Marcy18 03/18/2018  10:05pm

Both days are open calls, yes? I could make tomorrow work, but Tuesday would be far more convenient with my schedule. I don’t want to miss the opportunity though.

    smalltowncityboy 03/18/2018  10:10pm

So does anyone know of ANY jobbers that have worked there?

    Grungesax 03/18/2018  10:16pm

As far as I know, they cast Equity as jobbers, but non-eq only as full-season company members.

Also, it says they're looking for 5'+7 women/5'8+ men in the playbill posting!

    michy 03/18/2018  10:30pm

So does that mean if us shorter gals are under 5’7” it’s recommended we don’t attend? Or does it matter? Thanks!

    Toulouuuuse 03/18/2018  10:41pm

Hi ladies! I was told at their open call in NJ they typed out all of the short girls. I talked to the director at Strawhat, he was the one who told me, so I can confirm this!

    Genericwhitefemale 03/18/2018  10:44pm

So does that mean if us shorter gals are under 5’7” it’s recommended we don’t attend? Or does it matter? Thanks!

    Toulouuuuse 03/18/2018  10:56pm

Oops, didn’t mean to post that twice. Thank you!

    Toulouuuuse 03/18/2018  10:58pm

I’m 5’3 and I’ll be there so 🤷🏻‍♂️ Also bump on the housing question

    BlackJacket44 03/18/2018  10:58pm

And the pay works out to about to $100 a week

    Damn Yankee 03/18/2018  11:23pm

Is the non-Equity pay really $100/week or is this negotiable? Anyone know?

    ThePineapplePrincess 03/18/2018  11:34pm

    ^^^ I'm wondering the same

    3threat 03/18/2018  11:34pm

It says on backstage "Casting personnel do not accept video submissions. If you wish to audition for "39 Steps," "Souvenir," or "Elf," email gail@surflight.org with the show name in the subject line."

These are the shows that are happening in the Fall. Is this just their way of keeping track of certain people when we're auditioning, or are the people intending to audition just for those shows not supposed to go tomorrow and Tuesday? Like, tomorrow and Tuesday are just for their summer contracts or something?

    karatemaster111 03/19/2018  12:21am

jersey native. surflight used to be THE contract to get. then it went downhill. then it closed.... the horror stories are serious and many. now, they are reopen after a season last summer where i hear their Newsies was unwatchable. Yes, as a company member you’ll make $100 a week. Yes, you have to also work in the ice cream parlor (at least u did). is the shore nice at LBI? yes. will working there do anything for your career except make you hate theater? no. until they get their shit together i’d stay far away.

    openspace14 03/19/2018  12:23am

so where will the list be since nola doesnt open until 9?

    foghorn sound 03/19/2018  12:27am

    So. Do they house. Lol

    BlackJacket44 03/19/2018  12:50am

Those of you who are giving out false information on this thread, are you intentionally trying to discourage other people to audition so you have a better chance at a job?

    Keeter5 03/19/2018  2:49am

"We are seeking a very strong group of Singer/Dancers for the company. Specifically seeking Woman 5'7" and over who are very strong Singer Dancers most of whom will need advanced tap and Men 5'8" and over who are strong Singer/Dancers most of whom will need advanced tap." - Playbill

I feel as though us under 5'7 are welcome too!

    AwkieAussie 03/19/2018  4:46am

    What’s the list up to?

    ShirleyDevoreAt5Riverside 03/19/2018  5:01am

    List up to 22!

    Jmblast15 03/19/2018  5:52am

    List up to 50

    Ladynapsalot 03/19/2018  6:58am

    List up to 89!

    ThatWestchesterTheatreKid 03/19/2018  8:07am

Where is this? Playbill says 5 but no one is on 5 and the chalkboards don't say :/

    michy 03/19/2018  8:21am

Found it! It's on 11, playbill lied

    michy 03/19/2018  8:24am

Just saying I did a short TYA contract with them recently and they housed us, were wonderful, and paid better than any other theatre I’ve worked with for only a week and a half of work. Keep in mind I’m fresh out of college and haven’t done bway but I feel like if you know what you’re getting into, it could be great! Also pretty sure ice cream parlor is no longer a part of it. I’d highly recommend getting to know them!

    I'minthe212 03/19/2018  8:28am

    It's on the 11th floor!!

    DancesWithLasers 03/19/2018  9:06am

    Have they closed the list?

    Ollie 03/19/2018  9:12am

There are no more appointments, if you sign up now you’re standbys. Even the last like 20 people who got there before 9 didn’t get appointments.

    Icanseeyou 03/19/2018  9:28am

What time is the dance callback at the end of the day?

    awopbamboo 03/19/2018  9:52am

Can you friends us posted as they start getting through the standby list?

    dobbykat 03/19/2018  10:05am

Dance callback is at 4pm today. They’re not typing correct (I’m a short gal and was wondering if that will affect anything)? Thanks!

    Toulouuuuse 03/19/2018  10:06am

How have they been doing with the standbys?

    dobbykat 03/19/2018  10:58am

What time did they start signups this morning?

    biscuitbecky 03/19/2018  11:12am

    Bump with alternates/lunch?

    DancesWithLasers 03/19/2018  11:50am

How many people did they let sign up for appointments before they had to switch to stand by?

    ialwaysforgetmypassword 03/19/2018  12:00pm

They're dancing people till 2:30. Starting singing at 2:30

    DancesWithLasers 03/19/2018  12:19pm

So this really only pays 100 a week? Source?

    Suiteofjacks 03/19/2018  12:51pm

Does that mean they are seeing people sing, then having them dance in mini groups?

    Grungesax 03/19/2018  1:07pm

Bump on have they closed the list?

    vs 03/19/2018  1:14pm

    Ok, here's some facts:

    1. You don't HAVE to work in the ice cream parlor. That is an entirely separate entity, and the stock company does not work there. This is just a lie.

    2. Their entire stock company is housed on site. It's basically like a big compound. One bldg has like 15 bedrooms in it, the other has about 8. If you're a local hire, you'd probably be doing them a favor, as well as your cast, by staying in your own housing as it relieves the doubling-up in the ensemble rooms. Negotiate, and you'll get whatever is approved. The housing and the theatre is one block from the beach. That doesn't suck.

    3. Anyone who takes a gig for 100 bucks a week deserves what they get. You signed the contract. Deal with it.

    ...however...

NOBODY at Surflight (to my knowledge) works for 100 dollars a week, unless maybe the interns do. The company is 100 percent transparent. Negotiate your contract, or move on.

    4. The AEA contracts here are LORT ref to CORST. Salaries are fair to mid range. If you book the full summer season (quick math) looks like that's about 16-20 insurance weeks. How awful.

If you're non-union, empower yourself with the ability to say "no" if any contract you read doesn't meet up to your standards. Otherwise, the standards placed upon you are the ones you accept, and you're not allowed to blame anyone else for those, now are you?

I apologize, because this is much more of a "Bitching Post" sort of comment, but if you're going to believe much of the smearing that goes on...do everyone a favor and just move on to something "better" that "suits you."

    CompensatedPaperweight 03/19/2018  1:24pm

So just for a point of reference for tomorrow: how did today look? Sign up for time slots to sing? I just saw something about dancing before singing ? I’d love to get a better idea of how this call was opporated. Thanks in advance !

    Singingincircles 03/19/2018  1:48pm

FATNISS! Where are you ? Please give the history of the name changes for this theatre so people can look up the old threads.

    Damn Yankee 03/19/2018  1:48pm

    Who was in the room?

    letsgo 03/19/2018  2:13pm

Amen @paperweight. Also to the above, the theatre has not changed names. It has changed artistic directors over the recent years. The current ones have returned after being away a few years. The has another company in the area during those years. Yes it had issues and growing pains that come with any new company without a permanent space. Yes some people had bad experiences during those years. Yes some people had positive ones. Don’t let someone with a grudge diminish your experience. It is one you make of it. If you are a seasoned performer who has worked around the country or toured and have impressive credits it’s probably not the place for you while they are rebuilding after reopening last summer, if you’re young and want some credits and do some fun shows near the beach, go for it

    Keeter5 03/19/2018  2:13pm

    Wait... aren’t they singing first?

    awopbamboo 03/19/2018  2:34pm

Someone who was there today are they typing out short girls or no?

    lilperl26 03/19/2018  3:32pm

Can a kind soul explain to all of us confused people how today worked? How many were able to sign up before people had to go on the alt list? I'm guessing 150 but I'd love a number to help me gauge how quickly the audition run due to work obligations. Did everyone sing and those called back dance at 4? And there was no typing correct? Thank you for answering these questions; I owe you my first-born.

    ialwaysforgetmypassword 03/19/2018  4:55pm

what was the dance call like today?

    backtobed678 03/19/2018  5:53pm

how did this work today? 6am sign up on an unofficial that was then called at 9am by the monitor to sign up for proper “appointments”???? THANX

    qwertybelty25 03/19/2018  6:26pm

Do they want musical theatre or pop/rock?

    yikes^TM 03/19/2018  7:03pm

^They want something appropriate to the season...so if you look at the season and know what characters you are right for, you can figure this out.

The monitor and asst were amazing in getting in alternates with every group. If you missed your name but got back later, you got in.

16 bars. Dance at 4 if asked, but not every show dance-y so no worries if not asked.

CompPlaywright had a strong and fair write up-- on point.
Also note, these producers had, what was it called, Ocean City? Ocean something Theatre Co and had mannnnny complaints on AU and in general chatter about how they ran things. So it might be a hot mess, but again, just be prepared. I still auditioned because I love these shows and I love NJ. Take everything with a grain of salt.
