• NAB: Singing from the show 03/13/2018  9:42am

I've seen a couple of breakdowns this season that said auditioners are welcome to sing from the show. I'm interested to hear how often people do it when the breakdown gives you the option to do so.

It seems like it could only help you if you know there's a part you really want, but it's been ingrained into me not to sing from the show for so long that it makes me uncomfortable to even think of it lol

If the call says you may, and there’s ONE specific character you’re going for, I say just do it so they know who you’re auditioning for. If you want to be considered for multiple roles, I wouldn’t, because you may accidentally shoehorn yourself into just that role.

If they say it’s okay, it’s okay. But a couple of thoughts:

First, as the poster above said, singing from the show automatically puts you in one role in casting’s mind. If that’s all you’re interested in, great! But if you have any interest in another role or show in their season, I’d sing something else.

Also, if they say it in their notice, you betta believe that a ton of people will be singing from the show. It might be wise to choose something else to separate yourself from the pack.

My actual take is this: I’d be perfectly comfortable singing from the show, but I would only do it if I’m 100 percent sure that I’m right for the role, that I wouldn’t want anything else in the show or season, and that I can absolutely blow the song out of the water. If any of those things aren’t there, I’d sing something I love from my book.
