  • EMC woes for a very special asshole 08/15/2018  7:38pm

Can I just bitch for a second about that one bearded monitor who has made it his personal mission to make sure no EMC ever gets seen at an AEA call? That way old fucker who clearly never made it as an actor and wants to crush other people's dreams as retaliation?

I cannot be the only one who knows who this is. he doing it on purpose? I'm really, really good about signing up exactly when the AEA building opens so that I'm in the first 5 EMCs, and I usually get seen at some point during the day UNLESS THIS ASSHOLE IS THE MONITOR. What deity have I pissed off that it seems like every time there's an EPA for a show on my bucket list that's like NEVER done it has auditions in the AEA building with this asshole as the monitor? It especially hurts because those are the auditions I really, really wreck myself preparing for. And he does it in a very cruel way, as well! Not even in an "all appointments are taken" way, it's like the alt list gets CLEARED and then 35 more alternates just HAPPEN to walk in when this guy is feels like a slow, painful death, like he's fucking torturing people just because he can. This literally doesn't happen with any other monitor. Even in the AEA building.

Has this been anyone else's experience? I can't be the only one who hates this fucker with a passion.

Idk who he is but I have an EMC friend who often tells me there is one specific monitor that seems to really disdain non union actors and will try to arrange it so they/EMC are not seen to the best of this monitors’ ability. So you are prob not alone!

    Brb2207 08/15/2018  8:02pm

    Maybe tip him?

    Shall We Dance 08/15/2018  10:39pm

lol... I think I know who he is. Is he always looking at an iPad?

    meeeeeeee 08/15/2018  10:45pm

I think Inknow who you’re talking about too and Inhave found the literal opposite. He works really hard to get nonunion in. Maybe it’s the companies not the monitors. 🤷🏼‍♂️

    Icanseeyou 08/15/2018  11:18pm

99% sure I know who you're talking about, and I met him last year as a non-eq. I've always had a great experience with him and he always seemed to try to move EMCs and non-was as fast as possible! He does mini groups of Equity members as much as possible. I've been in a lot of calls with him recently and he's kinda been on the crap calls for EMC/non-eqs. A lot of those EPAs have been asking for monologue and song, which mess up timing (please, everyone, really try to keep to two minutes. It helps all of us, I promise). He's seriously a cool dude and I promise, he's not out to get EMCs or non-eqs. :)

    serenitymoon123 08/15/2018  11:47pm

I have to agree. He has always been quite nice and respectful to me. I can def. see how you'd take him a wrong way, but he's always gotten me into the room and provide a sarcastic remark, which I enjoy.

    Smactor 08/15/2018  11:49pm

Are we talking about Dan? He cultivates a prickly vibe to be sure, but I’ve consistently seen him find a way to squeeze in non-eqs when it seemed hopeless. The ipad, the sarcastic joke as he lines you up: there’s a sweet man behind that beard, but can you imagine what it must be like to work as a monitor at those full-season calls?

    FierceConversations 08/16/2018  12:03am

It seems pretty safe to assume that you’re talking about Dan.

Dan is pretty no-nonsense, and that can be a little off-putting. But I’ve heard him get asked the same question three times in a row by Equity members in line. I’ve seen him withstand countless “I’m only two minutes late, can’t I just go anyway?” speeches. He’s also been recovering from a leg injury for a few months and is finally walking without a cane again.

I always see him have some sort of pleasant, wry conversation with an actor he knows at just about every call, so I guarantee he’s got a good side. He knows his Equity rules backwards and forwards, too, and doesn’t make exceptions (nor do any monitors, in my experience). He lines up alternates as consistently as he can, but sometimes the people in the room take forever or don’t want to see as many people. And sometimes those waves of Equity alternates just keep coming.

Being EMC in NYC sucks for a lot of reasons, but I promise you that Dan is not actively trying to keep you or any other non-member out of the union.

On a related note, if you’re “wrecking yourself” for auditions, it might be time to take a step back and have a look at your audition process. That’s not healthy.

    VorpalDormouse 08/16/2018  12:43am

I got seen at my very first Equity call seven (holy EFF) years ago when Dan was the monitor, and I'm NonEq. He definitely has a different vibe than the other monitors, but he's always been nice to me.

    somethingtoconfessa 08/16/2018  6:08am

I can’t imagine this ISNT Dan you’re referring to. Is he prickly? Oh yeah...but does he get the job done? HELL YES. Is there a lovely human behind that prickle? ALSO YES. I’ve seen it many times.
Thing is, he expects people to know their shit. He doesn’t suffer fools all. And I appreciate that. He gets the same questions every day, even from long time Union members and that’s where I’ve seen him lose patience the most. I can’t say I blame him in that situation.
Also...I’ve gone to A LOT of auditions where he’s the monitor (because duh, we all have) and never have I seen him NOT try to get in non members of any kind if he at all can. In fact, I’m pretty sure I’ve been seen at every audition I’ve gone to where he’s monitored. Reminder that its all based on time, and his job is to keep it running on time and within the rules. If a call is running behind, he won’t be able to get as many people as he’d like if its busy, even when there’s alternates, but I’ve noticed that once people see he’s monitoring, its like...most people just get in, do their thang, and get out because, it’s what you SHOULD do anyway, but it’s because most of us know Dan is efficient AF, so we just get in and out. He’s full time for a reason (or at least I think he is), because he’s the best. He’s even able to get in mini groups in between ACTUAL groups when he knows time will allow for it. When I see he’s monitoring, I know I’m in good hands and have more of a chance at being seen as long as time allows and if the people ITR say they’ll see non members.
I get the annoyance at the “but ___ was nice to meee!” phrase, but Dan is the exception that I’ll defend from now until forever.

    Showbizdreamer 08/16/2018  10:57am

And yes Dan is the MOST wry/dry MOFO ever, but I love him for it, but it also helps that I respond well to people with that sense of humor anyway.

    Showbizdreamer 08/16/2018  10:59am

Sounds like a big weird coincidence overall.

By the way, the couches at AEA aren’t Equity Only. I promise we won’t kick you off, and anyone who tries to is a tool.

    VorpalDormouse 08/16/2018  11:57am

I have to jump in in defense of Dan because he seriously pushes to get in as many people as possible and he's damn good at his job and he definitely does not deserve to be called a 'very special asshole'. He has no control over how slow the people in the room are or how many alternates are going to pour in throughout the day but with the things he can control he is amazing. And yes, his no-nonsense personality may not be to everyone's liking (it used to intimidate me but now it cracks me up) but beneath the somewhat gruff exterior he really does fight for people to get seen. Yesterday, he monitored an EPA I was at and he kept going between the holding room and audition room to see if he could attempt to squeeze a couple extra people into the final group of the day. He genuinely seemed disheartened when one person's audition ran particularly long making it harder for those last people to get seen. So I would say that yes, it totally sucks not getting seen and yes, he isn't the kind of monitor who is comforting and holds your hand but he is great at his job particularly when it comes to getting as many people in the room and he's actually a genuinely kind, hilarious person and it just comes down to a lot of factors not within any monitor's control.

    lifeisacabernet 08/16/2018  12:00pm

Dan is the best. I'm an out of town actor, and come into the city only a handful of times throughout the year. Dan has always been awesome to me, even when I was EMC. He remembers my name and always greets me with a smile. As folks have mentioned above, he can have a pretty abrasive exterior, but he knows his job and does it VERY well.
To be frank, monitors see a crap ton of people ALL THE TIME. I highly doubt anyone would go out of their way to make your life more difficult. It sucks being EMC in NY, prime reason I left.
It's no one's fault that this business is fucking hard. But clearly this is not a situation where you're being singled out.

Take some time, refocus and press on.

    ByTheHammerofStritch 08/16/2018  4:11pm

On the other hand...we're only getting your side of it. Maybe the reason why is starring you in the face. There's nothing worse than an equity monitor scorned.

    ByTheHammerofStritch 08/16/2018  4:15pm

    Hello everyone,

Given what's going on elsewhere on this site recently, I think it's important to mention that we discourage naming names of non-public individuals. We feel strongly that we must protect people's privacy.

That being said, most of the stuff on this thread is talking about how nice and good this person is so we're going to leave it for now.

However, if the individual comes forward and request it be removed, or if things take a turn, we have no choice but to remove the thread. Just wanted to let everyone know.

    Thanks everyone.

    BackstageAdmin 08/16/2018  5:34pm

@Admin: can we get some collapsible threads with that please?

    FierceConversations 08/16/2018  6:02pm

@collapsible threads request, I got a solution to backstage’s bullshit in the works. Stay tuned.

    chhhhhe 08/16/2018  9:13pm

    Hello @FierceConversations and others,

We’re working on a solution to the collapsable threads request as we speak, and should have an update on that and some other big improvements in the next couple weeks.

We’re actually pretty excited about it and we think it’s going to vastly improve your experience on Audition Update. Stay tuned for more announcements, it’s coming real soon.

    BackstageAdmin 08/17/2018  10:50am

Just adding this in to prove that he's a cool dude. My favorite Dan memory is when I was at the ECC for Spongebob. I remember him looking at his watch very calmly, taking a half second to seem normal, and then slamming his hands down and leading that room in the Spongebob Squarepants theme song. I wish I had a video of it!!

    serenitymoon123 08/17/2018  2:10pm

DAN IS THE SHIT. I wish it was him at every audition. Be respectful and he will respect you back. If you are on his good side, YOU FEEL LIKE A QUEEN/KING. When new people come in and don't know the rules, he gets frustrated which IS UNDERSTANDABLE. Come to the audition with some knowledge. Keep playing the game and he will notice your hard work.

    Fizzy14 08/17/2018  8:29pm

    I'm with you, OP.

-Monitors are allowed to be frustrated. They don't get to show it or to take it out on others. That's the same rule every other employed person has to live by. Imagine your bank teller rolling their eyes because they think you should know something?

-It shouldn't matter if you're on his good side or not. Your bank teller doesn't get to deposit your money faster if they like you.

-Sarcastic comments don't have a place in a professional environment. It's always so weird for me to see people praise this person because he's sarcastic. I guess if it's directed at someone else, it's fun to hear him be snide or something.

-I wasn't there, but I really don't think I would have enjoyed having him lead the room in song. It sounds like Hades.

    08/17/2018  10:27pm

We named him for clarity and because the man has a name.

Admittedly, being cordial to him doesn’t earn you his “good side”. Usually just keeps him indifferent to you. That might be all you’re able to achieve with him, and that’s just how some people are.

Most of the people he gets terse with are people who don’t know EPA/ECC rules, which you should know if you’re auditioning for union houses.

And there’s no way to tell if the people he’s actually friends with are union or EMC.

    VorpalDormouse 08/17/2018  10:30pm

You posted about your experience with someone and people responded with theirs. You just feel attacked because no one has the same experience as you did. I am not equity and I was one of the first people to speak up in support of him, so please don’t make it up to seem like there’s a conspiracy against you cause I can assure you, you’re not that important lol.

You can not get along with someone fine, but the only person who has been attacking people is you, youbwere the one to start the name calling. No one is attacking you, no one is ganging up on you. People are simply sharing their experiences and they happen to be contrary to yours. If a post on Audition Update is stressing you out this much it might be worth looking at why it bothers you so much.

No one is saying your a bad person, simply that they had a different experience. However monitors are not customer service employees, they are not there to make sure you’re happy. They’re there to make sure the audition smoothly.

    Icanseeyou 08/18/2018  1:17pm

He's prickly outside but both good-hearted and extremely efficient. If he's the worst experience you'll ever have the business, OP, I can only offer my sincere sympathy and grimly heartfelt commiserations that you'll progress no further.

Just be patient, both with him and your career, let him do his job, recognise that's it's not a nice way for anyone to spend time essentially herding us cats, and you'll find things a lot easier. Not necessarily more pleasant, but easier.

I hope all of us will all be on appointment auditions soon instead of the dreadful, hopeless EPAs, but meanwhile let's make the best of what we have.

    Ron Gielgud 08/18/2018  1:33pm

Maybe I’ve just had bad luck...or he hates me specifically? I’m always extremely professional in the AEA building (I’m quiet as a mouse, I sit on the floor bc members may want the couch, and I lend people shit in the dressing room all the time) and I don’t ask dumb questions, so I don’t understand why. Like, it’s actually quite surprising to read that you guys have all been seen when he’s there when I literally always get seen (with EVERY other monitor, especially that awesome chick with the dyed hair who loves mini groups, she’s awesome) UNLESS he’s there. That’s just been my personal experience. And it hasn’t just been for seasonal calls, it’s been for specific shows as well. I’m now just confused and don’t understand why it’s happening.

    08/16/2018  11:10am

if you want to remove the thread, that's fine. i of course never named him, just wanted to see if anyone had the same frustrating experience as me.

    08/17/2018  2:41am

I’ve been nothing BUT respectful, that’s why I’m so annoyed! And patient, good god. You have no idea. And I sure as hell don’t go to NYC EPAs without an extremely clear understanding of the rules and policies, nor do I appreciate the insinuation that I don’t. I mean, if anything this has just demonstrated that he clearly has a group of favorites. Does anyone else see that as a problem? I guess I’ll spend less time preparing for auditions and more time kissing ass? I don’t even know how to respond to this.

OF COURSE he’s great to you if you’re equity (that’s seems to be his, and a lot of peoples’, definition of what constitutes a human being in this city) or one of his little favorites. I’ve been on upwards of 20 auditions in the past year with him as the monitor, on AND OFF season, and I never have witnessed anyone who isn’t equity being seen. What I have observed is him just randomly snapping at people! And yeah, he IS prickly! Or “dry” or “sardonic” or whatever. Except I don’t really see it as witty or hilarious at all. Just because it’s understandable doesn’t mean it’s acceptable. In many parts of the world, it’s just called I asshole! And I’ve been disrespected by him myself, for no freaking reason at all.

When am I going to be somehow lucky enough to see these moments of him being a cool guy? I have been NOTHING BUT KIND and considerate with him in person. In EVERY way. Even on here, I didn’t name him, and I had hoped this was a safe and anonymous place to vent, and not a medium for ganging up on someone with a different experience from yours (in a fashion that is somehow admin-sanctioned???). So thanks for invalidating my experience and making COMPLETELY unfair assumptions. Really appreciate it <3 <3 <3. This section should be done away with. Full stop. Because clearly you can’t get anything “off your chest” at all. I asked IF ANYONE HAD AN EXPERIENCE SIMILAR TO MINE, ffs. All I’ve learned is that I was correct—he truly must be out to get me personally, because he clearly is lovely to people whenever I’m not there. I wish I could just delete this. I can’t deal with the stress anymore. This is like high school. Why do you feel its necessary to JUMP IN when clearly a whole bunch of people already have???There really is nowhere to turn when things get rough in this biz. Seriously. I wish I’d never opened my mouth. I wish this never fucking happened. Admins, can you just DELETE THIS THREAD? PLEASE? I can’t take it anymore.
