Gig&Tell: Pioneer Playhouse

  • Pioneer Playhouse: NOT a Trap for Young Actors

As a young actor, Pioneer Playhouse was a lovely experience for me. The staff and company were welcoming, accommodating, and cordial. The working conditions were comfortable and absolutely safe, and the actors were given plenty of time to rest in the rehearsal and performance schedule. I feel that this company was previously described as a "trap for young actors" because young actors are expected to act as professionals, and they are held to the same standards as the most experienced company members. The company provides a fun and healthy work environment, but all actors are expected to have a strong work ethic and a good attitude. If an actor has neither of these things, they will have a hard time working not only here, but anywhere.

Five minutes into the first day of rehearsals it was obvious that the director Robbie Henson had not either completely finished reading or throughly digesting the script. In addition, on more than one occasion I felt lied to as an actor and was told multiple times "Safety Third" as a cute motto or slogan. As a whole the outdoor theatre seemed to have a shell of a heart for the art, but has lost it since the ownership of the theatre has passed from sister to brother. The unprofessionalism was beyond comprehension and the opportunity if arises for you, is not worth your time or effort.
